'Stand with Refugees' Reminds Us that People Matter
It has been said that our politics flow out of our culture, and that culture flows out of the creeds (the central beliefs) that people hold to be true.
As world changers, the ways that we take action and support different global causes can greatly impact the future. But sometimes, no matter how much we support a cause important to us, we can feel that our voices are not heard. We can get confused about how to take action, and disillusioned about whether our actions really matter. We can also feel that we’re being misunderstood.
The case of refugees in America (and around the world) offers an example of this tension. People who care for the refugee community – because people matter – can also care very much about immigration security – because people matter. But one thing we can hold in common is a deep concern and passion for those individuals and families who have been displaced, and persecuted, and denied their most basic freedoms and rights as human beings – those “yearning to breathe free!”
Stand with Refugees, a national campaign to promote care for refugee community, has made taking action extremely easy. Stand With Refugees is sponsored by a broad coalition of nonprofits, corporations, churches and individuals – including U.S. refugee resettlement agencies that resettle and assist refugees worldwide and in the United States. Their website provides an entire list of ways to get involved. With one simple click, you can sign a petition, connect with support organizations, or contact your local member of congress about your point of view on the issue.
World Refugee Day is June 20th, and to show people around the world how much they matter, 'Stand with Refugees' is asking supporters to use their influence with politicians and others to make sure refugee care is advocated, along with national security interests.
World Refugee Day is June 20th, and to show people around the world how much they matter, Stand with Refugees is asking all supporters to join together through June 12-16th, calling local lawmakers and congressmen to tell them we support refugees. “Your voice is a powerful thing, especially when it’s joined by tens of thousands. Our phone calls will flood the switchboards and tell our policymakers that we are a welcoming country.”
