New Kids Collection Champions Diverse Values Through Clothing

Back to School season is upon us!  It's an important time of the year for many.

Stories of people like Walt Disney and J.K. Rowling remind us of what can happen when ordinary people dare to dream big.  So much of the creative imagination in people starts early, in our formative childhood years, and most often by reading books.

Yet too many of our children do not have access to books – and so they have less opportunity to dream big, to dream beyond themselves, and in the process to discover themselves as well.  The great Oxford literary scholar C.S. Lewis described the experience this way:

“In reading great literature I become a thousand men and yet remain myself…. I see with a myriad eyes, but it is still I who see…. I transcend myself; and am never more myself than when I do.”

For years, people have communicated to Sevenly at this time of the year the importance of helping kids to themselves champion their own stories at school, while helping other kids in need to learn to discover and express themselves as well.

So Sevenly created a fresh, fashion-forward catalog for kids that helps other kids get their first books through an organization called First Book.

First Book is a non-profit organization based in Washington, D.C. that encourages reading and helps create the great minds of tomorrow. They provide equal access to quality education and provide the resources young kids need to succeed.

As they note on their website, “In low income neighborhoods, the ratio is one book for every 300 children and price is the number one barrier to book ownership.” Providing books creates a sense of belonging, creates confidence, and offers an opportunity. Reading broadens the minds of the children they serve, and helps inspire the aspirations of becoming a writer, artist, thinker, and inventor.

First Book is increasing diversity and promoting inclusivity through children’s stories by providing books that are relevant to their lives.

Education inspires action and provides a child with the experiences they need to help make the world better.  Self-discovery is an important concept to develop at an early age.  First Book is helping to encourage that, for which we can all be grateful!

And we can wear and share the story.
