Taylor Swift was again engrossed in controversy in recent weeks.

If there’s one person that’s no stranger to controversy – right from her formative years – it is pop’s biggest crossover star, Taylor Swift. However, she has managed to stay under the radar, re-recording and tweaking her old songs and compiling them into chart-topping albums.

Taylor Swift was again engrossed in controversy in recent weeks. But the peculiarity about this one speaks volumes, and it is clear from the get-go: this one doesn’t remotely concern her.

Noticeably, it concerns the record-breaking, internet-sensation Ice Spice, which Taylor taps for a remix of ‘Karma’ – fresh off the Midnights Deluxe album. But much more than that, the object of the controversy is no other than Matt Healy of The 1975 rock band and Taylor’s current man.

This article will unpack all the drama surrounding the ‘Karma’ remix, which has rocked the internet recently.

Let’s dive into it…

Matt’s Connection to Taylor Swift

It’s no longer news that the British lead singer of The 1975 band has been linked to Taylor Swift, despite their refusal to admit that anything is going on between them publicly. By reports, they both met over a decade ago and when rumors started filtering the media about their rumored relationship, it was quickly snuffed out.

Matt personally addressed the gossip and stated they were not in a relationship. However, he admitted to exchanging phone numbers with Swift, who has been appearing at his band’s shows.

However, the conversation about their relationship was stirred when Taylor and The 1975 collaborated to work on her Midnight album. It is quite unfortunate that their songs did not make the cut when the album tracklist was released and when the album came shortly after.

The next time they linked up again was early this year, after Taylor’s split with actor Joe Alwyn after 6 years. Close sources told The Sun that the two were reported,

“Madly in love. It’s super-early days, but it feels right. They first dated, very briefly, almost ten years ago but timings just didn’t work out.”

Now, with that out of the way…

So, What Happened?

The genesis of this whole tirade dates back to February when Taylor’s boyfriend, Matt Healy, appeared as a guest on “The Adam Friedland Podcast” with show hosts Adam Friedland and Nick Mullen.

Ice Spice was the topic for most of the conversation during the Apple and Spotify now-deleted episode. The reason isn’t farfetched. Ice Spice is one of the most sought-after rappers right now; her rise to fame was unprecedented, and she has landed co-signs from her peers and some of the biggest names in the industry.

So, naturally, when Healy was asked about the latest superstar, he mentioned that he had messaged the rapper on Instagram – after she aired her admiration for his band.

The question, while innocuous, was a trap, and Healy played right into it. The podcast hosts saw this as an opportunity to make fun of Ice Spice’s accent. They nicknamed her “Inuit Spice Girl” and “Chubby Chinese Lady”. While Healy didn’t have a hand in it, he did find them funny.

It quickly progressed into mocking Chinese and Hawaiian accents, and Healy seemed to be excited about masturbating to videos of Black women being ‘brutalized’ on hardcore porn websites.

This offensive behavior cannot be tolerated in a world still combating racism. So, naturally, there was widespread outrage and backlash. Healy, realizing his mistakes, addressed the matter during a concert.

“I just feel a bit bad, and I’m kind of a bit sorry if I’ve offended you. Ice Spice, I’m sorry. It’s not because I’m annoyed that me joking got misconstrued. It’s because I don’t want Ice Spice to think I’m a dick. I love you, Ice Spice. I’m so sorry.”

The apology didn’t seem to stick, as the backlash became elevated.

The Karma Remix and the Reactions That Followed

The controversy between the infamous podcast episode was reaching a fevered pitch when Taylor announced a collaboration with Ice Spice on the ‘Karma’ remix, which would be on her re-recorded album, Midnight.

“Um. SO much to tell you. I’m a massive fan of this brilliant artist and after getting to know her I can confirm: she is THE ONE to watch. So delighted to say that Karma Featuring the incredible @icespicee_ will be out TOMORROW night at MIDNIGHT ET as a part of the new Midnights (Til Dawn Edition) deluxe album.”

Taylor Swift's collaboration with Ice Spice on the Karma Remix has sparked controversy and divided opinions among fans and music enthusiasts. While the song represents a welcome development for both artists, allowing them to explore new creative territories and blend their distinctive styles, it has largely been perceived as a strategic PR stunt. Only Taylor Swift and Ice Spice truly knows the true intentions behind the Karma Remix. Whether it was a genuine artistic endeavor or a calculated PR stunt, the collaboration's controversy underscores the ever-evolving nature of the music industry and the extent to which artists are willing to go to remain in the spotlight.

Again, the podcast controversy has nothing to do with Taylor. But then, we cannot rule out that her boyfriend (now ex) was involved.

The skeptics point to several factors reinforcing the notion of the ‘Karma’ Remix being primarily a PR stunt. Firstly, the timing of the release coincided with a critical moment in both artists' careers, effectively drawing attention away from other ongoing projects. Additionally, the unconventional pairing of two artists with distinct musical styles appeared designed to create a buzzworthy narrative, maximizing exposure and media coverage.

She didn’t acknowledge her relationship with Healy or his offensive behaviors on the podcast. And how did she respond to the drama? Release a remix with no other than Ice Spice. It all seems too opportunistic to be seen otherwise.

Taylor performed the song with Ice Spice for the first time at New Jersey’s Met Life Stadium as part of The Eras Tour.

Nevertheless, as the dust settles and the initial excitement subsides, the prevailing perception remains that the ‘Karma’ Remix was primarily a strategic move to generate hype. While it succeeded in achieving its intended goal, the controversy surrounding its authenticity as a genuine artistic collaboration raises questions about the underlying motivations and sincerity behind the project.

Regardless of her intentions, the song has already blown up, earning the 2nd spot on the Billboard Hot 100. It has already helped Ice Spice break the record for the biggest streaming debut for a female rapper in Spotify history – a record previously held by Nicki Minaj.
