Beauty, Power, and Purpose: The Moment I Found Mine

Purpose is not something that is deposited, allocated, or relegated to certain individuals, we all have one. And with intent and focus, your purpose can propel and, motivate you. Purpose will give you power when you feel weak. For me, finding that purpose, and being clear about it, has been a journey. I was raised in an environment where I saw people striving. They were reaching for something more, all while giving me everything that they didn’t have themselves.

My upbringing really opened my eyes. It inspired me to see something bigger than myself. I believe this triggered my path to living in my now. I remember distinctly, the moment I decided to leave publishing. I was working in a very toxic and unhealthy work environment. This young girl came into the office at Seventeen, where I worked as the Beauty Director, and told me that I had changed her life by sending her to the dermatologist. Although I was robotically doing my job, she inspired me to realize I needed to do something different to inspire and impact people. At that moment, I felt compelled to help people see the beauty in their lives instead of writing about how-tos and lipstick.

That revelation, that I could utilize my gifts, heart, spirit, and knowledge, to empower and motivate people to believe in their possibilities. There’s a spiritual calling that guides me to help women become their best selves—guiding one to realize that we are all responsible for our individual happiness. I have fulfilled this for myself through Brown Girl Jane, solution-oriented products that create solutions designed to heal, soothe and nourish inside and out. My Morning Mindset programs spiritually connect women through morning prayer and rituals. I have connected with 200 people on our IG lives. And while I welcome more, I’m completely comfortable where it is right now. I’m grateful for what it achieves. If I’m able to help just one person see their possibilities, it’s icing on the cake

Social media has challenged many young women today, making them believe that everything they do has to be magnified. They utilize “likes” or followers as validation. None of that translates into purpose, society has manipulated us into defining our self-worth through a platform.

Even In our imperfections, we are still purposeful and powerful. For me, having clarity in all that I am and do to help others, helps me become more impactful and continue to live my purpose.
