5 strategies to getting those creative juices flowing

As a creative, I can be overly sensitive about my art and too timid to release content. So I more than anyone understands exactly what Erykah Badu is saying when she says ‘I’m an artist and I’m sensitive about my ish…” I tend to have an elastic heart when it comes to my craft, especially when combating my own fleeting emotions.

My least favorite periods are when I'm experiencing a creative block. Despite having the urge to create, as a writer, poet, and stylist, at times, a lack of motivation and inspiration stops me from producing anything. I’ve stopped seeing a creative blockage as a negative but simply another step in the process, especially when you're on the verge of self-appointed greatness. I get through my creative blocks by limiting my procrastination. I like to fully engross myself in art, hoping to awaken some sense of enlightenment. I'll take myself to a museum, an open mic, find a book store, or try for a change of scenery like taking a trip. Creative blocks don't come with a time limit. But the more trust you put in yourself and your process, the less likely they are to last.

  1. Try a Change of Scenery-During my last block I traveled to Art Basel as I wanted to immerse myself in a culture entirely. As much as I love the art in Miami, I also went in search of creative inspiration. I find it to be refreshing; perhaps it was just the weather

  2. Have a Brainstorming Sesh with Friends-There’s nothing like spending time with your friends, laughing, bouncing off ideas with one another, and having a few drinks to get your creative juices going. If you are not inspired, in the least you can say you had a few hours of fun.

  3. Free Style-Just do it, there is no right or wrong they are all just ideas. If you don’t like them then tuck it away, but before you do, take a moment to reread and look at what you did, the things you do like about your freestyle piece- run with it, you may have just created a masterpiece.

  4. Curb Unproductive Habits-Staying up late, watching tv, scrolling through your timeline on social Simply breaking out of your comfort zone can introduce you to new ideas

  5. Release your Inhibitions- I found an old video that I created of myself and a friend .as we spent time at an abandoned church in Little Haiti, assisting a friend in the breakdown of an art exhibition and, of course, shooting in-between and joking around. So after revisiting my old dance video, I've decided that it is time to share it. Or, as my friends would say, "Just post it!" don’t take yourself too seriously.
