The Makers of the Big Red Boots Flip the Script With Microscopic Drop
MSCHF, better known as the creators behind the viral Big Red Boots, have taken a decidedly different approach to their next creation. Following the oversized, cartoonish boots that took the internet by storm, the creative collective has chosen to go tiny this time around. Like, super tiny. Microscopic, in fact.
Measuring 657 x 222 x 700 micrometers, MSCHF has reimagined the Louis Vuitton OnTheGo tote bag as smaller than a grain of rice, a play on the trend of micro bags in fashion such as the Jacquemus Le Chiquito or the incredibly popular mini Hermés Kelly.
(Personally, I'm surprised they didn't opt for the Louis Vuitton Keepall or even a Speedy, both of which tie into Pharrell's early Y2K style which continues to inform the biggest names in music. Plus they're just more iconic LV silhouettes in general, imo.)
Making this teeny tiny wonder was no easy feat. MSCHF partnered with experts in biotech to manufacture the piece using microscopic 3D printing and a two-photon polymerization. Oh, and it's made of resin if you were curious.
If you’re asking yourself, “Why?” to all of the above, well, it’s all in the name of art. The Microscopic Handbag will be on display, alongside a microscope, at the Just Phriends auction on June 19. Curated by Sarah Andelman, the auction will live on JOOPITER, Pharrell’s digital platform. Which begs the question, how much of this was *not* approved by Louis Vuitton? With Pharrell as their men’s creative director, perhaps he was able to grease the wheels?
It wouldn’t matter either way, MSCHF is known to toe the line when it comes to intellectual property. Back in 2022, the creatives released a wave-soled sneaker heavily inspired by Vans. (Naturally, there was a lawsuit.)
