Is it or isn't it?

If I wasn’t afraid that a sinister robot was reading this and building a comprehensive dossier on my internet comings and goings, I’d tell you how I *really* feel about AI. Human-to-human, read between the lines, k?

That’s not to say that AI hasn’t produced some cultural benefits, its even served as a muse of sorts for designers this season, including Vetements who took an alternative approach, crafting a decidedly anti-AI collection.

In a press release, creative director Guram Gvasalia describes the collection as seemingly AI-generated, but crafted in a way that only a human hand could execute.

He writes, “I wanted the collection to have a visual effect of AI-generated garments. However, we still live in the real world. I wanted to create physical objects that would look and feel like AI-generated units while exploring all the facets of what fashion is from the most casual to couture. On the contrary, in its core, the collection is actually anti-AI, as the quality and the craftsmanship involved can only be done by human hands and with a passion that no machine can have.”

Vetements uses ChatGPT to write the remainder of the press release which describes the collection as follows:

“With a steadfast commitment to challenging the status quo, VETEMENTS once again breaks the mold, delivering a collection that defies categorization and redefines contemporary fashion."

Standouts from the offering include monstrous parkas, a slinky bodysuit reminiscent of a mannequin form, mid-shin length blazers, and trousers so roomy and exaggerated that they stack and pool like gowns.

If larger-than-life proportions aren’t your thing, look away. Because Vetements is going gargantuan, and its IRL.

Thank God.
