“Gray hair is a crown of beauty When it is found in the way of righteousness”. Proverbs 16:31

For as long as I can remember I have always had an obsession with white hair–not just silver, gray, but white to be specific. There was always something intrinsic about a man, or woman with white hair that mesmerized me.

When I first saw the Marvel character “Storm” a Black woman with white hair, who had the ability to control the elements of the weather, and on top of that was a gorgeous African woman. It was at that moment that I knew, I wanted my hair to be gray. There was also the X-men series character Rogue, who had streaks of white hair–that I thought was super cool. So, when I finally started to see streaks of white hair on my own head, I became excited. Finally I too could live my “dreams of having white hair”.

As I stated in my past article– I started my hair journey with braids, with beautiful white strands, and gradually built up the courage to cut it all off and dye my hair completely white. While extreme, I absolutely love it!!

It’s A Thing Of Beauty

For those of us that are familiar with some of the scriptures in The Bible there is a certain honor that is attached to gray hair (white hair), it is often associated with wisdom, righteous, glory, and splendor, just to name a few critical descriptives.

Unfortunately, from my perspective and much to my sadness, our society has not embraced the beauty of wisdom that reigns high on the heads of those who have gray hair. Interestingly, even in the beauty industry we have everything that encourages us to fight against aging– from anti-aging serums as well as a wide variety of dyes to hide your beautiful gray and white hair. To me; it seems counterproductive and simply way too much work to deny something that is so natural and inevitable.

Aging is simply something that we can’t escape unless of course, we all want to die young– and that is simply not my wish. Life is too sweet to be cut short unnecessarily. We have witnessed way too much, and suffered too many losses.

So, for the sake of this piece I wanted to interview, have a conversation with one of the most beautiful women I have ever seen with a beautiful head of white, silver hair–that I have had the privilege of watching get fully white. Miss Marsha Reeves-Jews, founder of WKIM Media Network; Keep It Moving With Marsha Jews. When we talk about a thing of beauty–she is my vision of beauty both externally and internally. She is a mother, grandmother, business owner, activist, community leader, and mentor to name a few titles.

She is one of the most powerful women in the Baltimore area with access to the most powerful people in her town. She also possesses a fire, a passion for the underserved in her community, that if you let me tell it, she is unappreciated by some. But, I totally see why she is driven to help those in need. Community activism is in her blood, even if she tries to put it down, it pulls her right back in. Which is probably one of the things that may have sped up the white hair in early stages of her life.

We know from former President Obama that the weight of a community, a country can age you rather quickly.

So, what is our obsession with youth? Well, I spiritually don’t believe that death was the original plan for life for us by the higher being–there is no way he would allow us into this life for such a short window of time simply to fade away. Or, was it that we wouldn’t fight aging so much. It is instinctual for us to deny aging, and we would do anything not to have any signs of aging. Be it our bodies, faces or the beautiful strands of grey or white on our crowns, it is all part of the cycle of life our physical attributes, and even our thinking. But that is another topic for another day!

I I

“The glory of young men is their strength, And the splendor of old men(women) is their gray hair.” Proverbs 20:29.

So how can we address it? Well, I had the pleasure of speaking to Marsha Reeves-Jews and asked her about her thoughts on aging and the beauty of her white hair, and this is what she had to say.

“Almost 10 years ago, I finally acknowledged and embraced that white hair was literally framing my face, whether naturally curly, flat ironed or braided. Yet, my body, mind & spirit continued to enjoy all the perks of living my authentic self not fretting about what the white hair represented. Whenever I look in the mirror and see every white strand, I am grateful to be reminded that each one represents 70 yrs of my life’s journey, for which I am eternally grateful.”

Talk about wisdom, and inspirational. So for those of us that are approaching a certain age–let’s see how we can change the narrative of the negative stigma placed on those of us that embrace aging gracefully. Because honestly there is no other option.

I for one am looking to do so with style, vigor and with all my mental capacity still in place for as long as God will grant me the time. So, I say, why fight the inevitable–just make sure you live the best version of yourself and continue to have the best “Crown Affair” with yourself.
